    Another (belated) update

On Christmas Eve we were asked by the Special Care Baby Unit to come and stay for 2 nights starting on Christmas day, to prepare Beanie for coming home. We were shown our room opposite the Houses Of Parliament, and (despite the location), we weren’t too excited about the prospect of eating Christmas dinner in hospital - but obviously we’d do what it took to help bring her home. Fortunately, on Christmas Day we had a call from the hospital saying that a consultant has decided that instead of us staying for 2 nights, we should just take her home (by this point the only thing they were doing for her was giving her vitamins, which they felt we could give her ourselves). So we spent Christmas Day going through her discharge, and learning about baby resuscitation (all parents of babies leaving SCBU have a lesson with a consultant) - and by 7pm the three of us were home!

Since then things haven’t been easy... Beanie found the transition to being home difficult, and seemed to find every new experience completely overwhelming. She hated her cot initially, and refused to sleep every time she was put down. However, now things are beginning to settle down, and she's gradually getting used to her new environment.

Regarding her health, she’s doing really well - however she will continued to be monitored and reviewed. We’re due to attend a liver review and ultrasound appointment at the King’s College Hospital paediatric liver unit later this week - this may involve a liver biopsy (in which case we'll need to stay in hospital) but we won’t know until the appointment. We’re also expecting an appointment with St Thomas ’ / Evelina Children’s Hospital in the next few weeks for a follow up from the neo-natal unit.

    More updates

Steff came home yesterday - very tired, but well, and it's nice having her back. Beanie / Harriet is still in SCBU, but the good news is that she's been downgraded to SCBU4 (the lowest SCBU level). Whether or not she'll be home for Christmas remains to be seen. Interestingly she has exactly the same allergy to plasters that Steff has - that's the reason for the red patch on her face, which was from the line that goes into her stomach through her nose. I wonder whether she'll inherit her dads allergy to hard work.... ;)

    More Baby News

Another quick baby related update. She’s been moved to the SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit), which is sort of a step down from intensive care, so that’s good. The amount of lines etc going in is a lot less now – she’s off the ventilator, but it doesn’t seem to have done her throat any favours, as she doesn’t cry when she doesn’t have to. Maybe that bodes well for when she comes home. As for that, it’s looking likely she’ll be in SCBU for at least another week – Steff is also still in, and won’t be discharged until Tuesday at the earliest. She does have a name now though – Harriet – Harry for short.

    More News

Some more photos. Latest news is that she is going to be in intensive care for at last another week - almost certainly longer. Steff is still in, and probably won't be discharged until Monday at the earliest.

    Baby Daughter

For anyone I might have forgotten to tell already (sorry!), our daughter was born on Tuesday, @ 9pm-ish. Unfortunately, a few hours later she was admitted to intensive care, suffering from breathing difficulties. She’s already had a battery of tests – blood, ultrasound (heart), x-rays, etc. Steff is still in as well, pending some tests. She’s quite a feisty little girl (the baby I mean - although the same could be said about Steff), so there’s no reason not to think that everything will turn out ok – but of course it’s hard not to worry. I’ll keep you up to date as to what goes on.

I've been to probably around 200 concerts - and have just got back from without a doubt the most amazing one yet. I can honestly say seeing them tonight felt like how it must have done in 1975 - I feel really privileged to have seen it... I've been lucky enough to see a lot of my musical heroes live, but I don't see how anything can top this. They were on stage for 2 hours 15 minutes (including 2 encores), and it went like 5.

    Beanie

So here is the first picture of entry #3 in our family, currently known only as 'beanie'. At the time this picture was taken, he / she (it's too early to tell) was about 2 inches long. No names talked about yet, although Steff has already vetoed some of the more interesting ones (such as Conan, Obi, Leia, Xena, etc.). He/she will be due around the second week of December, so it's going to be a busy Christmas for us :)
